Critical Reflection of Al Obour Exhibition

Join us for a critical discussion on Al Obour art exhibition. Together we will discuss the exhibited artworks, it's concepts, and the context of the space. We will challenge our individual understanding of the exhibition and deepen our knowledge by listening and sharing our perspective on the exhibition.

Al Obour is curated by Dr. Effat Fadag; a visual artist and academic working in the field of higher education. Fadag is an active participant in the pioneering visual art movement of Saudi women in Jeddah in the 1980’s. For Fadag, Al-‘Obour, which can be defined as the act of crossing, traversing or transcending, is the permeation of time, matter and existence. In an act of ‘obour, the sixth edition of 21,39 Jeddah Arts (2019) explores multiple forms of dialogue through both tangible and intangible mediums. Showcasing works by 26 Saudi and international artists across three locations, the exhibition presents the concept of Obour as the artists’ individual journeys to present their narrative through various art forms.

Book+Club+instagram+post+ARB.jpg

Join us for our first book club discussion session on Oriantalism by Edward Said. Orientalism is considered one of the most important books written on the history and nature of Western attitudes towards the East. Said considers orientalism as a powerful European ideological creation – a way for writers, philosophers and colonial administrators to deal with the ‘otherness’ of Eastern culture, customs and beliefs. Whether you choose the English or Arabic version, we will be discussing the introduction and first chapter of the book

Location: Beit Al Sharbatly - Al Balad - Historic District
